Project 10
Sharing Your
Basic DSL
Broadband
Connection
What You??™ll Need
Setup from Project 1
A second Ethernet network cable
Ethernet router
Cost: Router $40??“80
After you complete this project, you??™ll be able to share your broadband connection
among four computers, and gain some recommended protection against
hackers. Adding a combination firewall/router alters the connections of your
network and adds some critical configuration details we??™ll be covering.
The schematic of your basic broadband connection looks like Figure 10-1; your
DSL (or cable) modem connects directly to your computer??”pretty simple.
To this we??™ll add a small network router (see Figure 10-2), which takes the connection
from your broadband modem, processes it, adds protection to it (more on this
later), and then distributes the network data to up to four computers. The connections
to the router include power, wide area network (WAN) for the Internet connection to
be shared, and local area network (LAN) for the computers connecting to it.
