"Delivering Carrier Ethernet: Extending Ethernet Beyond the LAN"

?–  With MPLS already fairly well established in Service Provider networks (in the
Metro core), there is not a significant incentive to move to a Bridging solution in
their core/WAN. However, where it is not present, a Bridging solution will be a
viable and an economically attractive candidate, especially as new standards
such as PBT and PBB are ratified. It is also very much a likely scenario that
Bridging and MPLS will co-exist in Service Provider networks.
?–  The path from the status quo to an optimal Bridging solution will likely take several
years, perhaps over a decade, and will traverse through numerous intermediate steps,
as shown in Figure 16.8. It must be noted again, that this solution will likely also
incorporate scalable (in both distance and capacity) technologies such as WDM.

Carrier Ethernet Is Here to Stay??¦
Carrier Ethernet is here to stay. It has long reached an inflection point and demonstrates
continued??”and exponential??”growth fueled by a widespread acceptance both
by the Service Provider and the enterprise community.
