"Delivering Carrier Ethernet: Extending Ethernet Beyond the LAN"

?–  There are several influencing relationships between the factors themselves; in
these cases, they only indirectly influence the demand for Carrier Ethernet.15
(Increased) Competition for instance, can lead to an increased focus on technology
(feature) development (which, of course, in turn can stimulate demand).
14 Note that these are the first level of variables; including the second and tertiary levels (i.e., variables which
influence the first level) would make this a more realistic but also much more complicated analysis for the
purpose of this discussion. What is missing is the level of relative influence of the variables (i.e., compared
to each other) but realistically this analysis framework should give a fair idea when modeled with some
data points.
15 Of course, as noted earlier, a variable can both directly and indirectly influence demand.
522 Chapter 16
Having identified the main factors that will likely influence the demand for Carrier
Ethernet and also the nature of this influence (direct/indirect, positively/inversely),
a brief assessment of the developments in their respective areas helps gauge the
extent of their impact over the course of the next few years.
