Such allocated bandwidth can also be scaled on a
dynamic basis as the need arises and bandwidth becomes available.
Quality of Service QoS framework is one of the key aspects of WiMAX that distinguishes
it from most other wireless networking standards. As discussed earlier, all
services offered by WiMAX are in the context of service flows that have a fairly large
set of QoS parameters associated with them. WiMAX also provides scheduling and
bandwidth request techniques that facilitate serving the flow as demanded by their
QoS parameters.

Support for TDM Services Both the MAC and PHY aspects of the WiMAX standard are
inherently based on a TDM-like protocol, which facilitates implementation of TDM services.
WiMAX also allows for service scheduling and polling (e.g., UGS), which supports
implementation of real-time TDM services like T1/E1. Additionally, it allows for clock
synchronization between BS and SS to prevent bit slip, facilitating delivery of robust
TDM services.
Service Management WiMAX uses the notion of service flows and the mapping of
higher layer services to these service flows. The notion of service flow provides a handle
through which the services are managed.
