"Delivering Carrier Ethernet: Extending Ethernet Beyond the LAN"

MPLS 449
Although Ethernet OAM tools are useful for troubleshooting the end-to-end Ethernet
service, and especially for troubleshooting the portions of the service outside the service
provider??™s MPLS backbone, specific VPLS OAM tools may also be developed in the future
to enable service providers to troubleshoot the VPLS portion of an end-to-end service.
How Ethernet over MPLS Meets the Carrier Ethernet Attributes
As described previously in this book, the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) has identified
five key attributes of Carrier Ethernet. This section examines the five attributes and
how Ethernet over MPLS satisfies these requirements.
Standardised Services By standardising MPLS, pseudowires, and VPLS, the IETF
has ensured that vendors can develop interoperable equipment that offers EoMPLS
services. Organisations such as Isocore host interoperability testing events at which
vendors of EoMPLS equipment are able to verify conformance to IETF standards
and interoperability of their equipment. Ethernet pseudowires implement the MEF??™s
E-Line service, whereas VPLS implements the MEF??™s E-LAN service. Circuit emulation
services may also be offered using TDM pseudowires.
