The 1850 TSS aggregates, switches, and transports any combination of Ethernet /
MPLS / RPR, SONET/SDH, and WDM services.
Carriers can use the 1850 as a universal platform for either TDM or packet with all
services on any line card as opposed to having line cards side by side dedicated to each
service. This helps with transport network migration issues since any ratio of packet to
TDM can be supported in the system. Alcatel claims that the device can provide CapEx
savings of more than 30 percent and OpEx savings of more than 40 percent, compared
to alternative architectures based on separate platforms.
366 Chapter 12
The 1850 TSS supports a number of sizes to match transport switching capacity
requirements. Designed for the metro access market, the Alcatel 1850 TSS-100 supports
60 Gb/s wire-speed data switching capacity and up to 100 Gb/s in mixed packet/TDM/WDM
configurations. Other configurations include: 1850 TSS-15, TSS-320, and TSS-640.
Cisco Cisco got the RPR movement started with their prestandard packet ring protocol
known as Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT). It was successfully integrated into
routers and sold chiefly into the MSO environment for internet data transport between
routers.
