It is designed to deliver IPTV and VOIP along with legacy services
across and IP/Ethernet core. Port types include both copper and fiber uplinks for
supporting TDM and data applications at many data rates. It has the ability to convert
traditional voice and legacy data to IP and provides carriers with a platform capable of
integrating with IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) standards.
The Total Access 5000 is designed to support IP DSLAM, broadband loop carrier,
Fiber to the Node (FTTN), Metro Ethernet services via both fiber and bonded copper
access and aggregation. It is available in a 23-inch chassis for US applications as well
as a 19-inch chassis for international applications.
Alcatel Alcatel is an active proponent of RPR with their 1850 Transport Service Switch
(TSS). This device integrates Ethernet, TDM, and WDM in a single platform and is promoted
as a way for service providers to transition from circuit-based to packet-based
transport infrastructures.
The 1850 does not map TDM into Ethernet or data over SONET but rather carries
the traffic in a packet format natively on the platform. This contrasts with Multiservice
Provisioning Platforms (MSPP) that must map data payloads onto circuits.
