"Delivering Carrier Ethernet: Extending Ethernet Beyond the LAN"

Other resources whether files, processors, or storage could
be shared remotely, meaning better optimization of resources and more efficient
sharing of information across an enterprise.
?–  Higher reliability Backing up vital information at a remote location, for instance,
provided an extremely valuable and reliable service to the enterprise. Distributing
other devices, such as computing servers, storage devices, and the like, at different
physical locations also meant physical resources were available as backups in
case of failures. In an era where information and data availability was increasingly
becoming a strategic asset for enterprises, reliability was a necessity.
?–  Increased productivity and efficiency With increased communication, exchange
of information, and the distribution and maximizing of expensive resources,
the efficiency of the enterprise has improved considerably. Such benefits underlie
the development of the global Internet.
Thus there was significant value and motivation for enterprises to network beyond
the LAN. As commercial networking applications became available, the need to network
within Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) became a business necessity.
